May 12 Update_5th Grade

Wednesday & Friday

Wednesday: We are headed to Calvin College for the Chemistry Demonstration on Wednesday afternoon. We have to leave early, so students won’t be able to order hot lunch on Wednesday. The demonstration is indoors, but we hope to spend time outside afterwards–so students should dress for the weather and be prepared to spend time outside as well.

Friday: We’ll head back to Calvin College on Friday morning for our spring trip to the Eco-Preserve. Weather-dependent, students will be doing a macro-invertebrate study. They’ll wade into the pond to collect samples. I’ll give students more specific details on what to wear, but they’ll need to wear clothes they can wade in (and bring an entire change of clothes, just in case they get wet or muddy). We will be back in time for lunch; students can plan on ordering hot lunch on Friday.

Whitecaps and Camp Roger Waiver Form

If you have not already done so, please be sure to send in money for the Whitecaps game ($5/student, $16.50/adult). We want to have both of these details wrapped up by the end of this week. Please let me know if you need an additional copy of the waiver form.

Passage Hike

The 5th graders will be taking a hike on the last week of school. Look for details coming home soon about a surprise letter that parents submit for their children to open during the hike.

Bible

The students received graded Bible memory work quizzes back last week. Anyone who received lower than 70% on the quiz will need to study and retake the quiz this week. Anyone who received higher than 70% has an option to retake the quiz, if he/she would like to. Retakes will take place on Thursday of this week. The students will receive a review guide for our last unit test this week. The test will take place next week.

Literacy

The students have a Daily Language Review quiz on Thursday of this week. Additionally, we’re work on historical fiction book clubs. Students are either reading Chains or Sophia’s War–both historical fiction books set during the Revolutionary War. We’ll be reading and discussing the books (and the historical context) in these discussion groups. Students have discussions on Tuesday and Friday of this week. While they will have time to work in class, students will have to plan on finishing up work at home for homework.

Science

Students brought home Reproductive System books and study guides last week. The intent is for students to be able to read and discuss together with a parent. Please be sure your child returns the book and completed study guide by Wednesday, May 22.

NWEA Maps Tests

Due to some internet issues at school last week, we had to reschedule one set of the 5th grade Maps tests. Students will take the math test tomorrow afternoon (Monday, May 13) and the language usage test the following Monday (May 20).
