10/14 Update

Last Friday, we had our first grade level chapel. All third and fourth graders gather in the commons to sing and worship together. It is such a special time! This week, Professor Sandra Vroon from Calvin will be joining us to introduce Calvin Book Clubs to our students. The fourth grade classes at GRCES partner with Calvin to provide experience for students in the education program. The fourth graders are mixed up and placed in a group with a Calvin student. The Calvin student spends time creating engaging lessons around a novel. Every Monday and Wednesday, the fourth graders will get together with their group and enjoy reading and learning together, as the Calvin students gain valuable teaching experience. It is a win win situation!
Here’s what you should know this week.
Homework: The homework for this week can be found here. The parent password is Foot Frolic Frenzy. Thanks for encouraging your child to complete the homework well!

Hiking through the National Parks: The 4th graders have read over 600 books for HIKING THROUGH THE NATIONAL PARKS! To celebrate reaching this goal, we will have a Sports Day on Wednesday, October 16.  This means students may choose to wear sports hats, uniforms, jerseys, their Christian Eagles shirt, dance gear (Ballet) or Taekwondo uniforms. This will be a fun day! Students have until Friday, October 18 to complete this requirement. If they do not complete the 10 book requirement by Friday, the will have to stay inside for the first recess each day until they have completed it.

Pre-Conference Form: Last week, I sent out a pre-conference form. Thanks to those of you that have already filled it out! It should not take more than a few minutes, but will ensure that we can use our short time together to discuss what is the most important. If you have not filled it out, please do so by the end of this week. The form can be found here.
Foot Frolic Frenzy: The new turn in date for FFF envelopes/money is Monday, October 28. Students should hang on to their envelopes until then. They’ve got an extra week to collect pledges! Also, students should turn in their envelopes even if they’re empty (for instance if all their pledges are online). It’s helpful for the committee to have the envelopes no matter what. No matter the size of the donations, we would love for every student to participate! Our class will be running from 11:30-12:00 on Friday. We would love to see you there!
Upcoming Dates:
10/16 Box Top Collection Day
10/18 Foot Frolic Frenzy
10/22 and 10/23 Picture Retake Day
10/22, 10/29, 10/31: Parent/Teacher Conferences
10/23 ½ Day of School (12:10 dismissal)

12/16 Christmas Program

Pre-conference Form and Friday Reminders

  1. Foot Frolic Frenzy Postponed! We will have Foot Frolic Frenzy next Friday, October 18 due to the 100% chance of rain. All envelopes with pledges and donated money should be turned in the following week.
  2. Conferences: Hopefully you all have had the chance to sign up for a conference time on October 22nd or 29th.  The office sent out the sign-up last week. Before your conference, please take a moment to fill out this form. The form should only take a few minutes to fill out, and will help me keep our short conference time focused what’s important. Thanks in advance!
  3. PWJ: Thanks for taking a couple of minutes to respond to your child in their PWJ. It should be sent back to school tomorrow.
  4. Homework: Homework #4 is due tomorrow. Thanks for encouraging your child to complete the homework and to do their best! The homework can be accessed here.

Curriculum Update

Bible: We are currently finishing up a review unit on Genesis through Joshua, focusing on God’s faithfulness to his people. Our next unit will be Judges. We will talk about the cycle of sin, and how Jesus changed the narrative when he died on the cross!

Math: We are working hard on multiplication! Students are multiplying 1 digit by 4 digit numbers, and will soon be multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit numbers. We have begun the unit using strategies to solve multiplication problems that lend themselves to conceptual understanding (students understand WHY it works!). Later, we will make the connection between these methods and the standard algorithm. It is so important for students to be fluent in their multiplication facts. Please work with your child on these at home! I will be sending information home about XtraMath, a website/app that students can use to practice these skills!

Reading: Our first reading unit was on developing good reading habits. Students jumped back into the habit of reading every day, and for long stretches of time! We brushed up on important reading skills like visualizing, summarizing and inferring. Now, we are diving into our second unit, which is all about characters and character development. Students are reading a novel with a small group, having great discussions and practicing important reading skills. They are really enjoying their books! Please ask your student which book club they are in and what has been their favorite part about book clubs so far!

Writing: We are in the drafting stages of our personal narratives! Students have worked hard writing several scenes of something that they have experienced. We are excited to continue revising and editing, so that we are able to publish some nice pieces!

Social Studies: We have wrapped up our first unit on the United States, and where it is located in the world. We zoomed in on the U.S in order to take a closer look at the 5 major regions. We will now be focusing on science for the next few weeks.

Science: We have begun our unit on energy! Students will be experimenting with converting energy from one form to another by creating an electrical circuit.
