A Peek at Week 12
Bible – This week we’ll be reading stories from the time the Israelites spent in the wilderness after God brought them out of Egypt. Highlights from this unit include: God preserved the Israelites, taught them how to worship him, and brought them to the Promised Land. God took loving care of the Israelites. God gave the Ten Commandments to direct people in their relationship with him and others.
Math – This week we’re moving into Unit 3. The focus of this unit is working with addition and subtraction problems that have an unknown partner instead of an unknown total. We’ll solve these with math mountains, circle drawings, and equations. First graders are working on the goal of fluency for addition and subtraction facts within 10.
Phonics – We’ve introduced a new list of words that first graders should have memorized. These sight words are key words that your child needs to know to keep reading more and more books. Please continue working on the Most Common Words lists if your child has one at home. We are currently working on learning the words from list 7.
Reading Workshop- This week we’ll do a mini book study on The Moon Seems to Change.
Writing – We wrapped up our unit on narrative writing and will have a writing celebration this week Wednesday. Your child is invited to wear pajamas to school that day and to bring a stuffed friend, small blanket or pillow. Please also have your child bring his/her final small moments book back to school for our celebration – this book was sent home on Friday.
Social Studies/Science – This week we’ll finish our science unit on Space Systems and will begin a Social Studies unit called “What is a Citizen?” The visit to the police station will fit in with our unit when we review some of the community helpers that kids learned about in Kindergarten.
I’m collecting paper towel tubes for math. If you have one that is NOT bent or peeling apart, we’d love to use it. Thanks! Also, a box or two of ziplock baggies would be great!
