A Peek at Week 17: December 9-13

A Peek at Week 17

Devotions and Prayer – This month we will focus on advent, waiting and getting our hearts ready for the real meaning and celebration of Christmas.

Bible– We will finish reading about the Judges once we get back to school after Christmas break. Highlights of this unit include:God showed mercy to his covenant-breaking people by sending judges to deliver them. The Israelites returned to a cycle of disobedience after the death of each judge. Ruth, a Moabite, came to Israel with her mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth and Boaz shared a selfless love, and Ruth, a foreigner, became an important member of God’s special people. God made Naomi’s bitter and empty life sweet and full again.

Math – This week we’re doing a lot more practice with addition and subtraction story problems – reading them CAREFULLY and not just guessing if they are addition or subtraction. We’ll also take the end of the unit test.

Phonics – This week we’ll continue work on some Phonetic rules that help students begin to know if a vowel will make a long or short sound. We also continue to work on our sight words – please keep practicing these at home.

Reading Workshop– Our focus this week is on predicting, retelling and summarizing – all using the book Sneezy the Snowman.

Writing – We continue our work of writing non-fiction books that teach facts about a topic that we are experts on.  This week we’re doing a check in and setting goals for the next section of our unit – moving into writing information chapter books.

Social Studies/Science – This week we continue in our Social Studies unit on Wants and Needs. We’ll work on: Wants-needs, products-services, and producers-consumers.
