A Peek at Week 21
Devotions and Prayer – This month we are focusing on prayer and will be learning from a book called I Can Learn to Pray by Holly Hawkins Shivers. I’ll be sending home a paper updating you on the focus of our prayer time for that week.
Bible – This week we will be reading the stories of Samson – one of the Judges who lead Israel. Highlights of this unit include: God showed mercy to his covenant-sending judges to deliver his people. The Israelites returned to a cycle of disobedience after the death of each judge. Ruth, a Moabite, came to Israel with her mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth and Boaz shared a selfless love, and Ruth, a foreigner, became an important member of God’s special people. God made Naomi’s bitter and empty life sweet and full again.
Math – We continue working on place value – specifically the concept of tens and ones. Big objectives include: read, write and represent 2 digit numbers, compare two-digit numbers, add tens and ones, use strategies to add within 20, solve story problems.
Phonics – This week we will continue practicing our new sight words – list 10 and introducing list 11! We’ll also begin working on long vowel patterns – specifically bossy e at the end of a word. Finally, we talk about how to know when a word ends with CK or KE or K.
Reading Workshop-This week we’ll continue asking questions while we read. Our goals are to: use images and words to gain understanding, ask questions when you read, listen and view, understand why some questions are answered and some are not, and find questions to expand our thinking. We continue doing this with a collection of non-fiction books.
Writing -This week we will start an introduction to opinion books. We begin with examples of facts and opinions. We’ll also work on how to judge things fairly. We will be looking at some collections, picking our favorite item, and writing about our favorite one.
Social Studies/Science – We continue working on our light and sound unit this week. Here are some highlights of this unit: Sounds are made when something vibrates. Sounds can be loud or soft, and high or low. We use sound and light to communicate. A shadow is made when something blocks the light.
