A Peek at Week 22
101 Day – First grade celebrates 101 day together this week with many special activities. See previous email for more about students dressing up for this fun day in 1st grade.
Devotions and Prayer – This month we continue focusing on prayer and will be learning from a book called I Can Learn to Pray by Holly Hawkins Shivers.
Bible – This week we will begin the stories of Ruth. Our focus will be on: Ruth, a Moabite, came to Israel with her mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth and Boaz shared a selfless love, and Ruth, a foreigner, became an important member of God’s special people. God made Naomi’s bitter and empty life sweet and full again.
Math – We continue working on place value – specifically the concept of tens and ones. Big objectives include: read, write and represent 2 digit numbers, compare two-digit numbers, add tens and ones, use strategies to add within 20, solve story problems.
Phonics – This week we will be working with new sight words – list 10 & 11! This week we’ll also learn when C makes an S sound and when G makes a J sound. Finally, we’ll practice adding suffixes to words.
Reading Workshop– This week we’ll move on to inferring and how asking questions can help us figure out what is going on in a text. Our focus is on reading closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Writing -Last week we began our introduction into writing opinion books. This week we’ll begin to work on how to judge things fairly and will be looking at collections, picking our favorite item, and writing about our favorite one.
Social Studies/Science – We continue working on our light and sound unit this week. Here are some highlights of this unit: Sounds are made when something vibrates. Sounds can be loud or soft, and high or low. We use sound and light to communicate. A shadow is made when something blocks the light.
