Last Week’s Peek at the Week

I never posted this! Sorry!

A Peek at Week 25

FROM MISS PETERSON

Devotions and Prayer – This week we continue focusing on prayer and learning about God from his creation. Next week we’ll begin devotions focused on Lent and Easter.

Bible – This week we continue reading about David and how God chose him to be Israel’s second king. Our focus will be on: God kept his promise to the Israelites even though they were unfaithful and rejected his rule by requesting a king. At God’s direction, Samuel anointed first Saul and later David to be Israel’s first two kings. Saul did not trust or obey God’s commands, and the kingdom was taken from him.

Patterns of Power – Our focus this week is on adjectives – seeing how real authors use them in their writing to make it better.

FROM MRS. KINGMA

Math – We’ll begin Chapter 5 and will continue working on place value and teen numbers. We’ll work on making 10 for an addition strategy and will keep practicing our addition and subtraction facts through 10. One thing that you can practice with your child at home is counting from one decade number into the next. Here’s an example… 27, 28, 29, _____. Knowing which decade number comes next is going to be very helpful in this unit.

Phonics – This week we will work on word endings – first learning how to tell when a word ends with K, CK or KE. We’ll also work on adding suffixes (endings) to different words. Finally, we’ll keep practicing the Most Common sight word lists.

Reading Workshop– This week we continue inferring and asking questions to help us figure out what is going on in a text. This week we’ll be working in non-fiction narrative books to see how the graphics and pictures can give us clues about what we’ll be reading about.

Writing Workshop -We continue writing opinions.  We are working hard on developing our ideas and adding more details. Instead of saying, “I like that dog because it is cute” our goal is to add more and say something like, “I like that dog because it has cute ears and a nice nose.”

Social Studies – This week we begin a new Social Studies unit that focuses on geography. We will explore themes of location, place, region, and human/environment interaction. We will use a variety of tools (Google Earth being one of them!) to learn familiar and new vocabulary: maps, globes, compass rose, aerial perspective, absolute and relative location. We will also try our hand at creating a map of our classroom and addressing envelopes for our mail carrier to read!  We also have our field trip to the Post Office to see how mail is sorted for delivery. Later in the unit, we will discuss and explore how we interact with God’s creation and how we modify or adapt to our environment.
