A Peek at Week 17

A Peek at Week 17

Devotions and Prayer – This month we will focus on advent – waiting and getting our hearts ready for the real meaning and celebration of Christmas. Each day we read a story from the Bible and connect it to a symbol which goes on our Jesse tree. All of the stories point us to Jesus.

COLD WEATHER RECESS NOTE –   It’s that time of year… The weather is getting colder and winter is on its way!  Please send your kids with warm coats, hats and gloves so that they can have fun playing outside.  We do not stay inside unless temps are extremely cold (below 0).  Especially think about sending books regularly. Our playground gets muddy and messy once the wet stuff comes! Thanks!

Bible- We’re using our Bible time this month to read stories and picture books about Christmas.

Math – This week we’re doing a lot more practice with addition and subtraction story problems – reading them CAREFULLY and not just guessing if they are addition or subtraction. We’ll also take the end-of-unit test for unit 3.

Phonics – This week we’ll continue work on some Phonetic rules that help students begin to know if a vowel will make a long or short sound. We also continue to work on our sight words – please keep practicing these at home.

Reading Workshop- Our focus this week is on predicting, retelling and summarizing – all using the book Sneezy the Snowman.

Writing – We continue our work of writing non-fiction books that teach facts about a topic that we are experts on.  We’re working on some ways to tell more about a topic – trying to answer questions that someone else might have, writing twin sentences, and using labels in pictures.

Social Studies/Science – This week we begin a Social Studies unit on Wants and Needs. Our focus begins on what wants and needs are and how we get them. We’ll work on: Wants-needs, products-services, and producers-consumers.

Class Supplies – I’m still collecting toilet paper tubes for a Christmas craft. We’re hoping to use them on Friday! Paper towel tubes will also help if you have those!

Christmas Party: We’re keeping things simple this year with our class Christmas party. Thanks to all of the parents who already signed up to send treats! Each child is invited to participate in a book exchange. Look around at home for a gently used book that you think another first grader would enjoy. Wrap the book and bring it to school by next week Wednesday so we can have it ready to exchange on Friday.

Dates to Note:

  • December 21-Jan 3 – Christmas Break
  • Class Christmas party & Student Book exchange: Friday, December 18
