A Peek at Week 20

A Peek at Week 20

Note: A few kids still need to bring a flashlight to school for our science unit!

Devotions and Prayer – Last month we focused on advent, waiting and getting ready for the birth of Christ. This month we will be focusing on Epiphany and the gift of Christ to all!

Bible-  This week we will continue learning about the Kings of Israel.  Our focus will be on: God kept his promise to the Israelites even though they were unfaithful and rejected his rule by requesting a king. At God’s direction, Samuel anointed first Saul and later David to be Israel’s first two kings. Saul did not trust or obey God’s commands, and the kingdom was taken from him.

Math – We continue working on place value – specifically the concept of tens and ones. Big objectives include: read, write and represent 2 digit numbers, compare two-digit numbers, add tens and ones, use strategies to add within 20, solve story problems.

Phonics – This week we will continue practicing our new sight words – adding list 10 to our class word wall! This means that we’ve worked on 100 sight words this year. Sight words are critical as your child learns to become a fluent reader. If your child is still working on earlier lists, please consider setting aside extra time at home to continue practicing the words together. We do a lot of work on them at school as well and partnering at home can make a big difference!

Reading Workshop– We’ll be working on a unit that focuses on characters and traits in fiction literature.

Writing – We continue our work of writing non-fiction books that teach facts about a topic that we are experts on. Our focus this week will be on writing comparisons to teach, on writing conclusions, and using craft moves like speech bubbles and bold words. We are coming close to the end of this unit so students will also be choosing one book to revise and clean up.

Social Studies/Science – We continue working on our light and sound unit this week. Here are some highlights of this unit: Sounds are made when something vibrates. Sounds can be loud or soft, and high or low. We use sound and light to communicate. A shadow is made when something blocks the light.
