February 21 Update_5th Grade

Save the date for the RCS auction on Friday, April 26. If you are willing to sign up to bring in something for the 5th grade class basket, please click here to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d4da9ae29a7fd0-6thgrade

We plan to be outside next Wednesday afternoon. Weather dependent, we’ll head to Townsend Park for a tall tale writing activity. Students should dress for the weather (boots, snow pants, etc.) and be prepared to spend the afternoon outside. We won’t leave until after lunch. Students can order hot lunch if they would like.

Our Bible unit is continuing to cover Jesus’ birth and early life. Next week, we’ll look specifically at the birth of Jesus. Students have a Bible memory quiz on Friday of next week. (Additionally, the unit test will likely take place the following Friday.)

Social Studies

Students are continuing studying events leading up to the Declaration of Independence. They’re learning about different perspectives of loyalist and patriots.

The students have begun a mystery reading unit. Students have been reading “easy” mysteries to kick off our unit. This is to help with remembering vocabulary terms specific to mysteries. This next week they’ll add a little more difficulty to their mystery reading. We’ll kick off our mystery reading book clubs in March. The students have a Daily Language Review quiz on Thursday.

Originally, we were not scheduled to have school on Monday. Due to all the snow/ice/well days, school is back on for Monday. If you plan on being out of town, please be sure to touch base with Mrs. Radius to make sure that your child is marked down for an excused absence. Hot lunch option one on Monday is: bbq chicken drumstick, cornbread, and salad bar.

Immerse Bible Reading

The middle school students were invited to join in on reading the New Testament (NLT) throughout this spring. Nearly 50 students in 5th-8th grade have joined the challenge. If your child chose to sigd up, you should have received a paper last week with more information. (Or click here.) Books will hopefully arrive by the middle of next week. We hope to start our first discussion groups during lunch on Thursday, March 7.

February 10 Update_5th Grade

Three Days in the Woods

I was sad that it didn’t work out for the 5th graders to head to Camp Roger last week. Fortunately, we were able to reschedule our trip–and I’ll be able to join them this time! We plan to go to Camp Roger on Wednesday, March 27 and Thursday, March 28. (These are the last two days of school prior to Spring Break. If you anticipate leaving early for break, can you please give me a quick heads up?) A great big thank you to the Camp Roger staff for being willing to rework us into their schedule!

CSI Bible Symposium

Christian Schools International hosts a Bible symposium and invites thirty different teachers from across the nation to attend. I was honored to be selected to attend this year, and the conference is taking place on Wednesday-Friday of this week in Washington DC. Sue VanEngen will be the guest teacher working with the 5th graders at the end of this week, and I trust that they’ll have a productive and good time with Ms. VanEngen. I look forward to applying things I learn at the conference to Bible teaching with your kids!

Wednesday Morning and Afternoon

For the morning: Fifth graders are scheduled to hear the Grand Rapids Symphony on Wednesday morning. Students should dress “nice” and be prepared for a morning of wonderful music geared towards fifth grade students. They will be back in time for lunch; students can order hot lunch that day.

For the afternoon: Fifth graders are headed to Camp Roger with the 6th graders for a combined activity. Students need to have winter gear and be prepared to spend the afternoon outside.

Thursday/Valentines Day

Friendly reminder that Thursday is Valentines Day. Students are welcome to bring in cards or treats to share with the class. They will have an opportunity to pass them out at lunch on Thursday.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Friendly reminder that I plan to meet with you all on Tuesday of this week or Thursday of next week. See the email from last Friday with your scheduled conference time. If you are unable to attend your scheduled time, please contact Karla asap to reschedule for another time. Looking forward to chatting with you about your child’s progress and goals for the second part of the school year. If you have not already done so, please be sure to look at your child’s report card prior to our conference. If you are unsure how to view the report card, please let me know or contact Karla in the office.
