March 17 Update_5th Grade

Wednesday Afternoon

We plan to stay on campus on Wednesday afternoon. We will spend the first part of the afternoon outside and then be back inside to watch 6th grade poetry performances at the end of the day. Students should dress for the weather and be prepared to be outside. Students can order hot lunch.

Know God

Our March Know God discussion groups will take place on Tuesday of this week. Students should be sure to have completed their reading and bring their books to school on Tuesday.

Bible

The students will continue learning about stories from the first part of Jesus’s ministry. This week they will study the first miracle at Cana (water to wine), Nicodemus, and the story of the woman at the well. They’ll receive a quest review on Tuesday in class. Additionally, the unit quest (quiz/test) will take place on Tuesday, March 26. If your child is leaving early for Spring Break, he or she should plan on taking the quest prior to leaving for vacation. 

Literacy

The students will be finishing up their mystery book club discussions in class this week. Discussion groups will take place on Tuesday and Friday. The students are expected to complete the reading and a one-page (minimum) journal entry prior to each discussion. We’ll finish up the mystery unit with a celebration in library next Monday and a brief project that the students will complete in school next Monday and Tuesday. The next DLR quiz will take place on Monday, March 25. 

Social Studies/Science

Students are focusing on the Declaration of Independence in social studies. In science, they’re learning about different systems of the earth and focusing in on water.

Camp Roger

Fifth graders will be spending Wednesday and Thursday of next week at Camp Roger all day. Students will need sack lunches both days, and they’ll need to be prepared to spend the day outside learning and hiking around.

Kids Food Basket Service Project

Immerse Bible Reading

Our third Immerse Bible reading discussion groups will take place on Thursday of this week during lunch. We’re looking forward to kicking off the discussion groups this week. Students who are participating should have received a paper copy of the book. March 10 Update_5th Grade

Wednesday

Weather dependent, we plan to be outside on Wednesday afternoon (off-campus). As the weather continues to change throughout the next few months (hopefully, getting warmer!) students will need to make sure that they have correct footwear, coats, etc. I anticipate that it will likely be muddy/wet on Wednesday afternoon; students will need some sort of boots. We won’t leave until after lunch; students can order hot lunch.

Literacy

The students have a Daily Language Review quiz on Tuesday (March 12). Our mystery book club discussions will continue this week. The students have book club discussions on Tuesday and Friday of this week. Students need to be sure to bring their book club books to school each day. Additionally, they need one-page journal entries for each of our discussions.

Bible

The students will receive graded Bible tests back in class tomorrow (Monday). Also, we plan to squeeze in one more quick unit for Bible prior to Spring Break. This unit will focus on Jesus’s early ministry. The students will have a Bible memory passage and a unit quiz on Tuesday, March 26. If you anticipate leaving early for Spring Break, your child should plan on taking this quiz prior to leaving for break.

Social Studies

The next major thing the students will be focusing on in Social Studies is the Declaration of Independence. They’ll be examining what led up to the declaration, what it says, and what the impact of the document is.

Science

Students are learning about various systems of the earth. They’ll be focusing in specifically about water prior to Spring Break.

Immerse Bible Reading

Buddy Activities

We have two different activities planned this month with our second grade buddies. The first is this Friday; 5th graders will be sharing the tall tale stories they wrote with their buddies. The next is an afternoon reading time the following Friday.

Know God Groups

Students will receive Know God books in class tomorrow. They should complete the next section of reading prior to our discussion groups on Tuesday, March 19.

Kids Food Basket Service Project

All the middle school students will be participating in a service project with Kids Food Basket in the afternoon of Monday, April 8 (during iXplore). Look for more information coming home this week about how your family can be involved in donating an item for the service project.

6th Grade Update (March 8)

  • Students have been working hard on their Joyful Noise poem performances. Poems need to be memorized by Monday, March 11. Final performances will take place in the Worship Center from 2:40-3:00 on Wednesday, March 20; parents/family members are invited to join us for the final presentations.
  • The students have a Daily Language Review quiz on Wednesday, March 13.
  • We’re continuing to encourage the students to read at least twenty minutes each evening at home. One reading opportunity that all the 6th graders signed up for is a voluntary reading of the New Testament through the Immerse Bible reading experience. Students can read or listen (or both). The students should have this information, but a free audio of the book is available online here: http://immersebible.com/messiah/ or through the podcast app on a phone (search “Immerse: Messiah”). Students are completing Day 6-10 of the reading before lunchtime discussions this Thursday.

March 3 Update_5th Grade

Wednesday

We plan to head to Camp Roger on Wednesday afternoon with the 6th graders. Students should dress for the weather and be prepared to spend the afternoon active outdoors. We won’t leave until after lunch; they can order hot lunch if they would like to.

Literacy

The students have begun our mystery book club discussion groups. This week’s discussions will take place on Monday and Thursday afternoon. The students will be reading, journaling, and discussing a book over the next few weeks. We’ll finish up with a mystery celebration and project prior to Spring Break.

The next Daily Language Review quiz will take place on Tuesday, March 12.

Bible

The students will receive graded Bible memory work quizzes back in class tomorrow (Monday). The unit test will take place on Friday of this week. The students received a study guide last week. They will receive essay question details on Wednesday or Thursday, and we will have a review in class on Thursday.

Look for more information coming later, but please save the date if you would like to attend the final performances of the poetry presentations. Students will present their final performances in from 2:40-3:00 on Wednesday, March 20.
